It is March 1888 when Van Gogh arrives in Arl, Southern France and all fruit trees are about to bloom. Apricots, peaches and plums are all inspiration to the artist and he creates a series of fourteen paintings of blossoming trees. He completes a painting every day and by the end of April he writes to his brother Theo that he will need a new inspiration. Van Gogh finds it in the hundred of Japanese woodblock prints that he has been collecting for years. Inspired from the Japanese artist Hiroshige he creates the Flowering Plum Tree.
